The Future of the Wikis

So, I am back to talking about the wikis again, and this time, I am going to think about the future of the wikis (Alexrules14's Wiki, Alex's Personal Wiki, Trains and Buses Wiki).

If you haven't already caught up with recent events that happened. SkyWiki was merged into WikiOasis. I moved the Trains and Buses Wiki at SkyWiki to the WikiOasis version, and I requested that the Alexrules14's Wiki and Alex's Personal Wiki be moved to WikiOasis, and then it was subsequently moved there.

The migration of the wikis to WikiOasis had some benefits and drawbacks. One benefit was that now I didn't have to worry about my wikis closing down and getting deleted for being inactive, since it seems like WikiOasis does not have a dormancy policy unlike SkyWiki. One drawback is that the contributers can only use one account (Alexrules14), since all of the other ones are blocked on WikiOasis. This actually presents a double-edged sword: I can only use one account, but it is easier to use one account than signing out and in out of multiple accounts, since I might not know the passwords to the other accounts.

Now that I talked about the wikis as a whole, let's talk about the "mini-wikis". The mini-wikis are mainly on the Alexrules14's Wiki at WikiOasis, and I am still updating some of them, but the problem is, most of the topics I've made mini-wikis on, which are mainly about Roblox games, don't get frequent updates or no longer get updates at all. The only mini-wikis that are keeping the Alexrules14's Wiki alive are the Alexrules14's Random Things, Trains and Buses: Random, Imagination, and Fanon Edition, and US Presidents Play Minecraft wikis (which will no longer get updated after the series ends at episode 150).

After this part, I want to talk about the Alexrules14 Wiki hosted on x10hosting and the NotebookW Wiki hosted on HelioHost. Recently, my domain (alexrules14.wiki.gd) went dormant, so I reactivated it yesterday and it came back online. I realized that I had to sign in within 5-6 months to prevent my domain from going dormant again. Another recent event that happened is that I finally figured out how to get the /wiki/ in the wikis' URLs. I asked the Google AI chatbot, and it said that I had to put the .htaccess file in the root directory, which was different on both hosting sites (public_html and LiteSpeed for x10hosting, httpdocs and Apache for HelioHost). I used the MediaWiki ShortURL Builder for the /wiki/ URL, put the code in .htaccess and LocalSettings.php, and successfully did it. Now for the future of those wikis, the wikis will most likely close down in the future, since I might not have time to maintain them when I go to college. Additionally, upgrading MediaWiki will require more storage space, and the current setups at x10hosting and HelioHost have limited storage space on the free plan. That means that if I have to upgrade a MediaWiki version, I will have to delete the entire MediaWiki installation on HelioHost and x10hosting, and download the new version. This will definitely be inconvenient.

So back to the WikiOasis wikis, since I will be going to college soon and probably won't have time to maintain the wikis, I might make the wikis private and let them sit there, but I will also visit them from time to time just in case if WikiOasis implements a dormancy policy and the wikis close down and get deleted without me knowing.
